Unfortunately, it can be hard on your knees, especially if you routinely run on concrete or asphalt. If you find that joint pain is taking the enjoyment out of your running, consider running on a treadmill.
A treadmill gives you all the benefits of a great workout, without all the stress on your joints. The surface of a treadmill is cushioned for impact, which helps prevent the joint and muscle strains of running on a hard surface. A treadmill also lets you conduct your workout without regard to the weather. Rain, snow, dangerously hot temperatures – none of that is an issue if you’re running on a treadmill.
While a treadmill workout makes a lot of sense, sometimes it’s just too easy to make excuses for not heading to the gym – “this is a bad time, it will be too crowded;” “I’ve had a long day at work, I just want to go home;” “I’m just too busy, I’ll do it tomorrow.” Sound familiar? Having a treadmill at home that you can use at your convenience makes it much more likely that you’ll get the exercise you know you need.
If you’ve visited your local exercise equipment store and have been put off by the high price and high pressure salesperson, maybe it’s time to shop online. Since you’ll be making a big purchase without actually using the equipment, you need to do your homework before you buy. Here are some tips on what to look for in a quality treadmill:
* Deck – a long deck will accommodate your full running stride.
* Frame – for durability, a steel frame is best.
* Rollers – rollers should be 2 inches or larger in diameter.
* Programmable – To change the variety of your workout, better treadmills have built-in electronic programs to help you achieve your fitness goals.
* Warranty – a longer warranty means the manufacturer stands behind their equipment. A good warranty will include: a lifetime warranty on the frame; a 10 year motor warranty; three to five years on electronics; and a minimum of one year in-home service.
